Pet Stories

By Jean Jewell

My oldest son graduated from college with a diploma and an eight month old dog named Jack.  Guess who inherited Jack?  It didn’t take long for him to put our older dog Mr. Pennington in his place and rule our house.  The problem with Jack was that he loved to run away and one day Mr. Pennington followed him.  What makes this amazing is that Mr. Pennington couldn’t see well, had back legs that gave out and his hearing was going, but his sense of adventure and love of Jack was still going strong.  The entire family searched the neighborhood and surrounding areas all afternoon.  Around 6 p.m. we got a call from the dog officer saying that someone had called to say that two dogs were seen on a busy two lane road…the smaller one, Mr. Pennington on the tail of the frisky puppy, Jack.  The two runaways stopped at a roadside restaurant where they were picked up by the dog officer.  When I went to get the two culprits, the dog officer told me that she had never seen anything like the devotion that Mr. Pennington showed Jack. “The old dog wouldn’t leave the puppy’s side,” she said.  We were happy to have those bad boys back, and learned that dogs share the sentiment that family is everything.
